Patton's Willie

General Patton bought the first of many white bull terriers just after World War I for his daughters, Beatrice and Ruth Ellen.

Patton's first bull terrier was named "Tank" and turned out to be stone deaf. Patton's daughters called him by thumping on the floor.

The most famous bull terrier owned by General Patton was named Willie -- short for "William the Conqueror."

Willie was purchased in 1944 and followed Patton everywhere, with little bells on his collar to let people know he was coming and where he was. Willie also had regular GI "dog tags" issued to him.
